What are the "types" of Magnesium?
Other “types” of magnesium are simply magnesium ions bound to amino acids or other compounds to improve bowel tolerance, but that doesn’t guarantee high absorption across the gut wall (even with sufficient stomach acid). They may reduce diarrhea, but that doesn’t mean all the magnesium reaches your muscles, organs, and bones rather than being lost in the toilet.
The differences between these compounds come from what magnesium is attached to, not from magnesium itself. Magnesium is just magnesium; its benefits depend on how much your body can digest and absorb. Calling them “different types” suggests magnesium itself changes form, which isn’t true. It’s like using the same wheat to make artisan bread, flatbread, or cake, the wheat hasn’t changed, only what it’s combined with and how it’s prepared.
The natural magnesium compounds that dissolve readily in water are magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts). Magnesium chloride is superior because chloride ions are the most abundant in the body, making it highly usable.
